Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation”

Hi, I’m Karla.

Health

Help me live past the age of 66. Guatemalan girls suffer disproportionately from malnutrition and lack of access to health care.

Safety

I want to feel safe where I live. 76% of all violence against women in Guatemala occurs at home. According to the US State Department, Guatemala is the nation of origin for the vast majority of the hemisphere’s sex trafficking.

Future

My family and I live off of $1-$2 a day. 51% of the Guatemalan population lives on less than $2 a day and 15% on less than $1 a day

Equality

I want to become an educated professional. While women comprise 60% of Guatemala’s working population in both formal and informal sectors, they make up only 19% of the economically active population in the formal economy.

Freedom

I want a chance to create a fulfilling future. My friends as young as eight years old are sold into prostitution to maintain their families livelihood.

Sponsorship is the most effective way to provide a future for a girl like Karla.
